On this page, we will discuss the basic guidelines and equipment needed for most Paranormal Investigators. Please adhere to these rules as there is much experience behind them which can save you time, money, and mistakes.
Paranormal Investigators are different from Ghost Hunters in that they do not go out to find Spirit Phenomena. The job of the Paranormal Investigator is to follow up on the findings of Ghost Hunters; to do the research to help prove the existence of Spirits through interviews of witnesses, and researching documents, records, and personal examinations of reported Haunted areas. Research and personal contact is the key difference between the Ghost Hunter and the Paranormal Investigator.
Because you are a Paranormal Investigator, you most likely will become involved in your first Investigation by invitation. This invitation usually comes from someone who has contacted you because of a problem haunting or knows of a person you may be qualified to help concerning a problem haunting. Of course, problem hauntings may not be the only thing you are asked to do. Many people are just looking for confirmation that they are being haunted. In this case, they are most likely going to need answers as to why and by whom... or what .... they are being haunted.
Researching your information concerning a case prior to your actual personal investigation of the property can lend credibility to your findings and your reputation, making dispute of your findings less likely.
Try to locate any individuals or groups who have previously researched the area or phenomena. Ask them to reveal their findings to you. Find out what they did and their methods used for research. Find out how they came about their conclusions. Make note of all in your log book and make copies of their documents when possible. If they will make copies for you and send them to you, all the better. Keep these questions in mind: Is their methods and findings reliable ? Do you agree with their conclusions ?
You will need to find out the names and addresses of former owners and residents of the property in question. Find out who owns the current lien on the property. Try to locate past to present neighbors who might have witnessed anything unusual in the client's area or dwelling. ... or any unusual happenings in their own dwelling or area during that period of time in which they were neighbors to your client.
Establish who the current owner is of the client's property. Never assume the resident is the owner. Look for the deed to the property and house. And research past owners of the home and property as far as you can. Do not get lazy and stop after only a few. The more information you have on the property and its residents, the better it can lead to many more answered questions.
Places to look for such records are the County Registrar-Recorder office. They keep all records, books, deeds, real estate transactions, and voting polls, not to mention birth records, death certificates, marriage records and divorce certificates for that county. Other offices which hold important documents concerning residents of the property may be found at the local Utilities office, The Department of Motor Vehicles, The Public Library, Historical Societies, Churches and Cemetery records. The point is, to find if any Spirit Phenomena was ever witnessed in the past on the client's property. Of course, this will only be helpful if you find you are dealing with a Human Spirit presence. MIS infestation is to be solved by an experienced Exorcist, and not by psychics, mediums, or Ghost Hunters who have no knowledge of such things, except as their egos demand.
Although many Paranormal Investigators consider themselves to be psychics or mediums, it is best not to depend on these abilities too much. MIS often produce information and images that seem "Human" so as to make themselves appear in all ways as Human Spirits, with histories that match up well. Their lies have deceived most psychics and mediums throughout the years and this has lead to many investigators believing in stories that never really happened. If the story given by any Spirit is one of great sorrow and self pity, then it is most likely a false story. No Human Spirit will ask you to do anything for it or find anything for any reason. The Spirit cannot use material objects of this plane of existence. They are beyond that now.
Find out the personal histories of all persons involved with the property from past to present. Check for birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage and divorces.
Finally, check and double check everything. Cross check your work for accuracy.
NOW, ON TO YOUR CLIENT'S HOME OR PROPERTY
The main thing you are going to find as a Paranormal Investigator is that most reported hauntings, about 98% of them, are explainable in scientific ways. Nevertheless, do not doubt or show doubt toward any person claiming to have a case for you. If you close your mind ahead of your investigation, you may miss some pretty important clues as to truth or mistake. And an open mind is a must at all times.
In most cases, during the investigation, you will be housed in the area to be examined, usually right in the area where most of the Spirit activity has been witnessed. Be sure to try to sleep in the effected area. Unlike Ghost Hunters, you are probably not going to be around shy Spirits who are interested in a quiet, still place to dwell. You are in a place due to some Spirit or Spirits causing discomfort to some living Humans. They are most likely not shy. And they probably won't leave without some convincing reason.
In a case where an outdoor investigation is called for, follow the guidelines of the Ghost Hunter and use the same equipment list on their page.
In any investigation, you will start by doing email interviews with the client. Do not be so quick to give your home phone number or address. Many people who will contact you may not be what they claim. Be aware of the dangers Paranormal Investigators face from disbelievers and religious fanatics who may wish to harm you because of their lack of understanding or plain ignorance and driven hatred. Only after you have established a good relationship on line, should you allow more personal contact. Phone numbers can be exchanged. But try not to give your home address if it can be avoided. City and State are ok, but no details. After all, the client is not coming to your home..... but you to their's.
When you have arrived at the client's house or place of concern, begin an interview with all persons in the home, even if they are not related or involved in the Spirit activity. You need to know the minds of all those who inhabit the area. Make an audio recording and detailed notation in your log book of all things said and done.
When you have completed the interviews, do a daytime walk-through of the entire area or home. Take EMF meter readings of every area. Make notations of all readings in your log book with times of reading recorded. Keep your audio recorder going throughout this walk-through. Pay attention to your gut feelings and emotions. These can tell much. Note any feelings you have or hunches in your log book.
REMEMBER !!! YOU ARE NOT AN EXORCIST !!!
Leave that work to the people who know what they are doing. Here are some general guidelines the Paranormal Investigator should follow.
NEVER go on ANY Paranormal Investigation alone. Always have a partner with you. This can give you a feeling of extra security when odd things start to happen, such as Spirit Manifestations. And it can also come in handy if you need assistance in your examination or in case of needed medical attention. A PARTNER IS AN ABSOLUTE RULE !!!
Once you have made acquaintances with the client, and basic information has been given concerning the problem activity, you should conduct a daylight walk-through of the entire dwelling, building, or area. Take EMF readings of all areas and be sure to note all information in your log book. This information will help you understand daylight power sources normal to the area or building as compared to the ones you will find at night. In addition, walking through the area or building in lighted conditions, will make navigating the area in darkness a little easier, ... and safer.
The prime times for Human Spirit Manifestation is between 6pm and 9pm. Of course, manifestation is not limited to any particular time. Plenty of activity has been proven, by our organization alone, that Spirit activity is constant throughout day or night. Malevolent Inhuman Spirit activity is strongest between the hours of 2am and 6am, with 3:30am being absolute prime.
Set up a base camp which is not within the area of inspection. This is where you will store your equipment, clothing, etc. Here, you will be able to rest, talk, and discuss your findings without contaminating your investigation area. But don't make it too far from the investigation area. You will find yourself needing to return to your base camp quite often for new batteries, film, tape, etc.
If you are examining a house or building, you may use one of the rooms of the dwelling as a base. However, if there are Spirit Energies throughout the building, you might be contaminating the room you choose. So, we suggest using a car, tent , trailer, or motorhome outside the examination area. Nevertheless, you will be sleeping in the examination area. The base camp is simply to be used for storage of needed items, and discussion of findings.
Keep at least two working flashlights with you at all times. You will need this a lot as you find yourself continually working in darkness or darkened areas. Spirit Energy seems to effect anything electrical, so the extra flashlight might save you some stressful times if the area energies knock out your first flashlight. Adhere to this rule even if you are in a well lit house. In many cases, Spirits will play with electrical items such lights, and you will need light even when the Spirits turn of the ones in the building.
Another absolute piece of equipment you will ALWAYS need on your person is official ID. Drivers license or State ID is needed. If you are too young to have these items, then you are too young to be in an investigation. Of course, ID is usually only called for when conducting an out-of-doors investigation. But the importance of carrying legal ID on your person at all times is not diminished by the area you investigate. Keep in mind that the license and Certificates you carry from Shasta Supernatural Investigators DOES NOT give you the right to act as a City, County, State, Or Federal agent. The Shasta Supernatural Investigators certificates and licenses only give you permission to use our name in your work, and let others know you are a serious investigator of Paranormal Phenomena.
When all interviews and day and night walk-throughs have been performed, it is time for the basic verification process to begin. This verification process is very similar to that of the Ghost Hunter. You must try to prove the existence of Spirit Activity just as the Ghost Hunter had, which is why it is a nice thing if a Ghost Hunter has preceded you on a case. He can fill you in on his findings. It is then up to you to try to match his findings with your separate findings. This helps verify the accuracy of both yours and the Ghost Hunter's work. Follow the tips below to assure best results in your investigation.
When you have established an area to have the highest probability of Spirit Activity, you must find a comfortable place to set up your equipment and relax. You will need to remain as quiet as possible during this set up. The whole time you are doing this, you should be talking, telepathically, to the Spirits in the area.... including your own Spirit Helper Messenger and Soldiers. You will need them to protect you. If you are not sure how to do this or are unfamiliar with Spirit Helpers according to the information provided by Shasta Supernatural Investigators, then you MUST STOP HERE !!! DO NOT CONTINUE UNTIL YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THESE BEINGS ACCORDING TO OUR TEACHINGS. The dangers involved beyond this point are too much for those who are not properly prepared and protected by their TRUE SPIRIT HELPERS.
Let the Spirits in the area and building know why you have come and what you are doing. Let them know the complaints of the client(s) and what you plan on doing about it. Do not be threatening, but be firm and polite. Tell the Spirits the result you plan on having and what they must do to solve this problem. If you do this respectfully, then you should have absolute success within the day, or within a few days of beginning this investigation.
Wait until you have arrived at the examination site before you load film, audio, and video tapes. If you do this beforehand, you will find many of those you present your information to will scoff at your findings, claiming that you could have contaminated the film or tapes before you got to the examination area. Yes, skeptics will be that picky. In addition, preparing for your examination in the examination area will allow the Spirits to see what your intentions might be, and they will be more willing to cooperate, if that is their demeanor.
ALWAYS keep your log book with you at all times. Without it, you cannot keep an accurate record of every noise, movement, or manifestation. This log book is your proof of the existence of Spirits. Without it, you have nothing. And no person will take you seriously if you don't keep accurate records of EVERYTHING.
When you have finished setting up your equipment, it is time to take a seat and begin your conversation with the Spirits. If you have taken the lessons from Craig S. Martin concerning how to do this, you are ready to begin. If you have not done so, STOP HERE !!! YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO CONTINUE !!! Please contact Craig S. Pressing on without this knowledge WILL lead to unwanted Spirit attention in YOUR future..... by your invitation to do so.. even if it is not your intent for it to happen.
When you are prepared to speak to the Spirits in the area or building, you must remain calm. Tell them the exact complaint against them and what needs to be done to accomplish a solution. Let them know the way it has to be. But at all times, be polite, respectful, and firm in your solution. Offer no deals which would allow them to stay in the present area or building.
After you have made yourself and your intent known to the Spirits, it is time to be VERY patient... and wait. Give yourself about 48 hours minimum for any response or activity to happen. If none happens in this time, and if costs and time allow, you may return to your own home and wait for the client to contact you again to update you on occurances or the lack thereof. If things seem to continue after about a two week period, then you should return and plan for a longer stay. Keep using the same techniques as mentioned previously. If the manifestations continue or increase in intensity, then you must contact an authorized, respectable Exorcist to perform a forceful evacuation of unwanted Spirits. Contact Craig S. If you do see a Spirit Manifestation or an Image, do not panic. Remain still. Control your breathing. And begin to record everything about the experience. Record in your log book what the image or manifestation does, when it started, how long it lasted, when it stopped, what it says, what noises you heard during the manifestation, etc. Write everything you feel, say, think, hear, smell, and do . Make note of everything it does, says, how it looks, how it is dressed, etc. Don't forget to see how this is effecting animals, birds, and your clients. This is what makes you believable when you present your records for scrutiny. If these records are incomplete or sloppy, your reputation is damaged and you will not be taken seriously.
Do not approach manifestations unless you are willing to take the chance of them disappearing on you. Most images fade when approached. Try mapping the direction of any manifestation movement and include notes of its movement rate, direction, and duration. Make note of height, shape, colors, and density of the manifestation. And take as many photos as possible, including video. Did we mention to turn on all audio recorders. This is where having a partner really pays off.
If you have partners, have them likewise record the event in every way possible. They too must have log books to help verify your findings and experiences. Without them, its just your imagination and singular voice according to skeptics.
Make sure you have your audio recorder on at all times. Note any noises you hear during your examination, including non-Spirit ones. Make note of the time you heard it. When you later are listening to your recordings and you hear a noise, check your log book for the time you heard that noise. This will help verify your audio findings when it is also logged in your book. Are you now beginning to see the importance of your log book ?
If you believe objects in the area will be moved by Spirits, or if you have set up an experimentation in which you hope an item will be moved by Spirits, then remember to place a chalk circle around the item. If it is moved, then trace a line from where the item was to where it is now located. Remember to log the time of the activity, how far it traveled, how long it took to travel, and any heat recordings or other manifestations that took place in the area of the activity. Again, you must remember to log every activity you encounter. Keep the cameras, audio recorders, and video active at all times.
Remember to check your equipment continually throughout the project. Spirits have a tendency to make electronic equipment malfunction. Unfortunately, there is no remedy for this. Make a note of it in your log book and keep monitoring as you can.
When you believe you have the evidence you require, you must then get to the real work of the Paranormal Investigator. RESEARCH !!!
When you are ready to develop your film, make sure to have it done at a reputable commercial business. Doing your own developing will mean your photo research means nothing to the scientific world and skeptics.... (They are the same.. aren't they? ) Commercial development of film means they cannot call you a photo-manipulator who is out to trick a unsuspecting public. Commercial development techniques can be checked and verified for malfunction. Tell the developer to be sure to return all negatives and pictures, including ones that seem imperfect. What they might think is bad lighting, dim picture, out of focus, etc., might be evidence to you. Developers don't know what to look for.... but you do. Remember, you must protect your reputation and prove your findings.
DO NOT throw out any evidence, recordings, or findings. Keep everything, no matter how insignificant the items may seem. These are permanent and are to be kept locked in a secure place. DO NOT LOSE ANY OF IT!!!
Watch the countless hours of video. Listen to all of your audio recordings. This is where a large speaker, such as those found on kareoke machines, comes in handy. Then look through all your hundreds of pictures taken. Be sure to make notations where photos, sounds, and images match your log book entries. Make note of matches, times, etc.
Below is a complete list of items NEEDED for your basic Paranormal Investigation.
1. (2) Flashlights. These should be standard two-cell or better. You need a second flashlight in case the first one stops working properly.
2. (1) Large Note Book or Log Book. This items is the most important item you carry. You will be logging all activity, noises, movements, etc. If you do it, or spirits do it, you must log it. This is where your evidence lies. Without it, you WILL NOT be taken seriously, even by amateur Ghost Hunters.
3. Several Pens and Pencils. We suggest at least five of each. You don't want to run out of these when you need them. And they are always breaking or running out of ink.
4. (5) Large Zip Lock style storage bags. This will hold your evidence. Make sure you keep them clean before you use them. Any contamination can leave your captured evidence useless as proof of your findings. Skeptics will be looking for faults.
5. (1) Large Stick of Chalk. In buildings, you will use this to mark directions you take, mark areas and directions apparitions take, etc.
6. (1) Non-Electronic Compass. This helps you keep track of directions you take plus directions taken by apparitions or moving objects.
7. (1) Mercury Thermometer. DO NOT USE A DIGITAL THERMOMETER!!! Remember, electronics often malfunction around Spirit Energy. Therefore, to record true temperature changes, you will need a Mercury Thermometer.
8. (1) Watch. You will need to keep track of time throughout your examination. Try to get a NON-DIGITAL watch with a sweeping second hand. Digital equipment may malfunction due to local Spirit Activity.
9. (1) Stop Watch. You will need this item to record exact duration of Spirit activity.
10. (1) Digital Camera. This item seems to be more successful at capturing Spirit Phenomena and quickly pays for itself in photo development savings. We suggest purchasing a Sony Mavica FD71 or 91. However, any good camera will do just fine. Make sure you get one that holds at least 75 pictures before downloads are needed.
11. (1) 35mm Camera. This item is has captures Spirit Phenomena for many decades now, and should not be left out of any examination or Hunt. Use Polaroid film for best results, ASA400, color or black & white. You can use a faster film for faster light absorption, but the grain of the film makes details less likely. Spots could be mistaken for orbs, which of course, they are not. Make sure you have a flash for the camera as Spirit Photos usually require them, the exception being when facing MIS. MIS will emit a light effect without the use of flash photography. Use a wide angle lens to capture as much area within your view as possible. 28mm is suggested.
12. (3) Tripods. These are needed for your video camera , digital camera, and 35mm cameras. These will keep your pictures steady;... very important for clear evidence via visuals.
13. (1) Video Camera. More a more Spirit Phenomena is being caught on video. It is as important, if not more, than still photography. From it, you can learn the movement of Spirit orbs and activity.
14. (1)Audio Recorder. You will need at least one good one. We suggest the use of a kareoke machine, because of its large speaker. This helps greatly when you are listening to hours of audio recordings.... trying to hear some message from the Spirit Realm. You must have a very sensitive microphone. This is needed to pick up the smallest sound, even from other rooms nearby. You can find very nice ones at your local Radio Shack for around US$70.00. Be sure to place a wind cover on the mike to avoid picking up the rattling pound of wind noise. Use metal grade tapes. These will not stretch or break easily as oxide tapes tend to do. Skeptics can't claim that noises heard are from stretched tapes when metal is used.
15. (1) Inexpensive Audio Recorder. This is used for backup of your larger recorder. Remember, these electronic items can go on the fritz when confronted with Spirit Energy. So remember to always have a back up of all electronic equipment.
16. (1) Electro Magnetic Frequency/Radiation Meter ( EMF Meter ). Spirit Energies consist of Electromagnetic Energies which can be detected on the EMF meter. Readings between 0.9 and 2.5 are pretty good indications of Spirit Energy. However, you should first try to find if the reading is related to electrical outlets, equipment, or appliances, even if these items are not connected to any electrical source. High readings are often the result of wires in walls or large electrical equipment. Nevertheless, explore all possibilities. Use slow, sweeping movements of the meter to pinpoint the energy sources. NEVER jump to conclusions.
17. Last but not least, be absolutely sure to bring enough film, audio tapes, video tapes, digital camera disks, and more batteries than you could ever think you need, to your examination. You DO NOT want to run out of any of these items. Try to bring enough to last at least 24 continuous hours.
For a more extended, outdoor examination, you will need these additional items.
1. (1) Cellular Phone. This item is useful when needing to make an emergency call or when long distance communication is needed from a wilderness location.
2. (1) First Aid Kit. Make sure it contains plenty of bandages, ointments, creams, lotions, scissors, medical tape, gauze pads, eye wash, and insect repellent.
3. Plenty of clothing, two changes per day, for climate and conditions of the area to be examined.
4. Plenty of light weight, yet nourishing food. If you are going to be on a camping excursion, make sure you have at least three full meals worth of food per day. If rationing becomes necessary, this could then be used more sparingly. Freeze dried food is a good idea if plenty of water is also brought.
5. Bring Plenty of Water. There is no more important item to bring than water. Even if you know there is a water source nearby the examination area, the water might be contaminated. Use water you are sure about. Bring at least one gallon per day of examination.
6. (1) Stop Watch. This item is useful if you plan on exact time measurements of Spirit Activity. Use it to measure how long the activity lasts.
This pretty much completes the basic list for Ghost Hunters and Paranormal Investigators. Of course, you can increase the number of items listed to suit your needs. But, we suggest that you use at the very least, the items we've listed here.
Remember to use your best professional appearance and demeanor when you do your Paranormal Investigation. Follow proper professional guidelines when researching witnesses, and public records. With good personal contact in Government records departments, you should easily have enough help and experience to find out just about any information you might need in your investigations.
