Make no mistake, there is a difference between a Ghost Hunter and a Paranormal Investigator. Yet, each should be organized and professional in every way.
If you are new to this field of study, we suggest that you begin your research into the Paranormal as a Ghost Hunter rather than a Paranormal Investigator. You cannot become an Investigator if you don't know the rules of the Ghost Hunter. And Ghost Hunters are not as experienced as the Paranormal Investigator. Yet, each is an important field which needs filling throughout the world.

A Ghost Hunter is more informal than the Paranormal Investigator, which seems to be what most Paranormal Enthusiasts are looking for. However, this field of study is not to be taken lightly if you want your findings to be taken seriously. In this field, you can either be a hobbyist, or a seriously interested party who is out to prove the existence of Spirits.
The goal of the Ghost Hunter is to sight or catch a Spirit on audio, video, film, or digitized image in an area where no Paranormal Phenomenon has been established. The reports they follow can be rumors or just a "feeling" that a particular place or area is Spirit Infested. Call it a hunch. The areas can be any kind of former dwelling, public place, cemetery, or church. There just aren't any rules which dictate where a Spirit can or cannot be found.
Ghost Hunters do not investigate Spirits which are harassing humans on Earth. That work is left to the more experienced Paranormal Investigator. Ghost Hunters do, however, look for places rumored to be haunted. These excursions and haunts can take a long time, from several hours to several weeks or months. And because there is often wilderness or the great outdoors to deal with , the Ghost Hunter's list of needed items for an examination are greater than those for the Paranormal Investigator.
The Ghost Hunter's job is to establish whether Spirit Phenomena exists in a given place and prepare the way for the Paranormal Investigator to research the phenomena, area, histories, witnesses, etc., and to basically finish up what the Ghost Hunter has discovered. A good Ghost Hunter will assist the Paranormal Investigator in most of his research of the area in question. This, of course, does not include having to deal with the tedious job of documents, books, witness interview and additional like work which is solely the responsibility of the Paranormal Investigator. The Ghost Hunter should keep to his usual work of monitoring the suspected area for new manifestations or changes.
As a professionally minded Ghost Hunter, you will need to know when to let the Paranormal Investigator take over. Once Spirit Phenomena has been established by the Ghost Hunter, he must then contact the Paranormal Investigator to do the hard work of proving what has been found. Leave the solution to problem hauntings up to the Paranormal Investigator. He is trained to do everything beyond discovery. But make note of his work. This will prepare you to move on into his field, if this is your goal.

The Paranormal Investigator is not someone who goes out into wilderness areas or abandoned buildings in search of the unknown. If that is what you are looking for, then you are desiring the position of a Ghost Hunter.
Paranormal Investigators are different from Ghost Hunters in that they usually are called in to a known case of Haunting. This request for assistance in problem hauntings usually comes from the victim residents, or Ghost Hunters who have verified the existence of a haunting. A Paranormal Investigation is a known, reported, or presumed haunting which requires a carefully planned, and scientifically researched examination. The reasons for investigating a haunting would be to prove or disprove the haunting, to assist victims of the haunting in finding a solution, to assist victims in their own personal investigations, and to perform solutions which will cause relief to victims of troublesome hauntings.
Paranormal Investigators often use scientific instruments as well as psychic ability to come to conclusions about Spirit Phenomena. When the information of the location of the haunting is gathered, then records, documents, books, rumors, and witnesses must be checked and verified to establish the information as fact or fiction. This verification is what truely separates the Ghost Hunters from the Paranormal Investigator. If you are not interested in any public contact in the Paranormal Field, then the field of Paranormal Investigator is not for you. Public contact is a MUST.
Be ready to assist Ghost Hunters when they call on you. Professional Ghost Hunters will know if a place is haunted or not. This saves you, the Investigator, time and expense. And Ghost Hunters are very desirable as team members for Investigations.
